About Plant Propagation
A Plant propagation Top called a CompotTop is an easy fun way to grow seeds from scratch inside the upturned lid of a Compot while composting below.
You don’t need this unless you want to grow things for your garden to either eat or plant out as ornamentals.
This is not everybody’s cup of tea but it’s quite rewarding seeing what you can grow and lots of fun for kids to experiment with growing seeds.
All you do is reverse the Compot Lid, fill it with soil or propagation mix, water it then plant your seeds.
Next – place the lid on top of the Compot but don’t lock it.
Place the Propagator top over the lid and with a little downward pressure twist it clockwise and lock it into place
The gases escape through the top where you can water it also through the same holes.
The heat generated from the composting waste below creates just enough heat to keep the seeds warm.
Not only that it creates a nice humid environment in the top much like a glass house or terrarium.
Propagation directly in the garden
The plant propagation top can also be used directly in the garden over any new seedling or plant.
Place it over the plant or seed and secure it in place through the holes in the tabs with the 4 stakes.
This protects the plant from the elements and garden critters till it is big enough to be left uncovered.
Water the plant through the holes in the top so you don’t have to remove the top every time you want to water.
Remove the cover when the seedling is big enough to fend for itself.
Use in your chicken pen
You can even use it in your chicken pen over the Compot for growing wheat, barley or oats.
Or use it directly on top of a big pot plant so the chickens don’t destroy whatever it is you are trying to grow.
The lift pin allows for easy removal of the lid to fill more waste into the Compot below.
Whatever you do will depend on what you want to achieve in your garden the thus determine whether this is a valuable addition to your Compots.
I love mine for growing wheat grass in record time ready to juice.
Propagating in Summer can be hard in extreme climates so try doing it in the shade or semi-shade.
You can usually propagate in the sun or shade in winter depending on what you are trying to grow.
Keep experimenting and just have fun with it. It works. But like all gardening can be trial and error.

The Compot Top is made of clear plastic with a small amount of UV stabiliser added. This means it will last for several years in your garden before it deteriorates. I have had one in the garden in the same spot every day for 5 years now and it is still going strong. There is no reason why you won’t get 10 years of use out of it as you will most likely not have it in the sun every single day like I have done to test its endurance.
Unless you are ordering a large quaintly of CompotTops then it is best to order them with some Compots as they fit inside the Compot for packaging so you get more value out of the postage costs.
If you add a Compot Top to your order it’s a good idea to fill in a custom quote form and we will work out the best postage rate for you with either the courier or Australia Post.
Or if ordering only one Comtop you will need to fill in a custom quote as the system is not set up to purchase just one Top in case it adds postage to a normal order of Compots and tops.
To post one CompotTop cost the same as three Compots (unless you live in Brisbane where the rates are generally less than most other areas) so consider the postage costs when you order to get the best value out of your post.
After 3 Compots it costs roughly the same to post up to 14 Compots depending on where you live. You can test different bundles for postage costs by entering your suburb details and requesting a quote. Just don’t follow through with the order. Try another bundle to compare postage costs, and then make your choice on the bundle you want. Or call us if you can’t work this out.
Please be aware of excessive postage as the program will charge you for every bundle you purchase if ordering two different bundles. This is easily resolved with a custom quote or by calling us. If you make a mistake with the postage we refund you the difference or you can top up your order with some garden supplements if it is a small amount.
If for any reason you feel the postage to your area is excessive (and sometimes it is too remote areas) please email us or go to this link at Australia post and check if the postage is better using the box dimensions and weight listed above.

If you get no satisfaction with the post then please call us or email us and see if we can’t help you get a better deal.

The Propagator Top is a simple plant propagator that takes up less space than many other propagators. It can be used on top of your Compot or directly in the garden. It all depends on how you want to use it. All you have to do is reverse the lid, fill it with soil and/or toilet rolls, water the soil, plant the seeds, cover with the top then lock the top into place with a little downward pressure as you turn it clockwise.
I have not tried every single seed to see what will and won’t grow so it’s up to you to find what works in your garden and in your climate. But don’t give up the first time because you might have had bad seeds, it might have been too hot or too cold, or the moon might have been waxing instead of waning or vice versa. Like all gardening, it can be trial and error finding what works in your climate and your particular garden environment. But it is fun and rewarding when you see those little seeds sprout and find out it actually works.
It’s great for the occasional gardener that wants a few homegrown herbs and veggies without the need for heating trays, greenhouses etc.
Wheatgrass can be grown in less than 10 days for juicing, to feed for your chickens or even to put in a salad. It’s a fun way to teach your kids how to grow seeds. If you are super serious about propagating you can get as many as you like depending on how many Compots you have.
But you don’t even need Compots to use the Propagator top because you can use it directly in the garden over a seed or seedling. Simply hold it in place by placing the 4 stakes through the holes in the side of the Top. This will stop all manner of little critters from eating your new plants. The same level of heat is not generated this way but it still works. Just experiment what works best for you and your garden.
